How we go about “fixing” your yard at MorningStar Sod & Supply, Inc...
The first step is to remove the existing unwanted grass.
We use a sod cutter to harvest your old, patchy grass and weeds in the same fashion that sod was harvested back in the early days of sod production. This provides a leveled-out effect while stripping the vegetation at the same time. We then pick up and remove all of the old unwanted grass and weeds. During the process of harvesting your yard, the sod cutter generates loose soil that is used when we hand-rake over the entire area to create a perfect sod bed. In most cases, extra topsoil is not needed unless an area needs to be raised due to water retention. We then apply several organic soil treatment products along with a starter fertilizer. This ensures the best possible outcome for your new sod to root in properly. It also provides your new sod with the necessary nutrients to grow for several months without the need for additional fertilizer. At this time, we install your new sod. In certain applications, we use sod staples. Harsh slopes or dog yards generally call for this approach. We then remove any scraps and leftover waste from the sod installation and instruct the client on proper watering techniques.

Different times of the year call for different care of your newly installed sod. A general rule of thumb is to keep it wet for the first two weeks after initial installation and then at that time you can start mowing it and water as needed. To get more technical on the different times of year...
Spring is a great time of year for sod. Most of the time you need to saturate the new sod in the morning and then just check it in the afternoon to ensure the moisture is still present.
Summer brings a more challenging time as the heat and humidity constantly are the issue. This time of year we recommend early morning saturation then a light to moderate watering in the late afternoon.
Fall tends to be easier as the days are shorter and cool nights help retain moisture. Again, an early morning saturation is most generally adequate with a close inspection in the late afternoon to ensure moisture is still present.
Winter is by far the best time of the year to install new sod. In most cases, an initial saturation at the time of installation is sufficient and all you need to do for your new sod to succeed. The sod is in its dormancy stage at this time of the year and needs very little water to live. With heat not being an issue winter remains the best time of year to “fix” the yard.
After the yard is “fixed” and your new sod has had a two-week grace period to take root it is now time to mow it. We highly recommend mowing at this time so the grass does not grow too long and then gets mowed too short which could stunt and/or traumatize the new sod. We recommend that you raise your mower deck to its highest setting for the first mowing. Then drop the deck gradually until you reach your desired height.
